On January 19 mathleague.org received an email from the Des Moines Central Academy math team outlining their plan to use our February contest as a vehicle to raise funds to be donated to the American Red Cross in support of the earthquake relief effort in Haiti. Their students are collecting donations from sponsors willing to pledge a specific monetary amount for each point the students score on their sprint rounds at our February contest. Inspired by this idea, we have decided to roll out a league-wide campaign that will hopefully increase by several fold the amount raised in this effort.
For our part, mathleague.org is pledging a league-wide donation of one cent for every point scored by all verified students on sprint rounds at our February contests, both at the junior high and high school levels. Because of the urgency of the need, we have already made an advance donation of $300 to the Red Cross, but we anticipate that the total amount donated will be far greater, a goal we can accomplish with your assistance. We at mathleague.org would like to invite you to join us in this campaign.
Thanks to Central Academy for this idea, and best wishes to all of you as we work together to raise money for this worthy cause.
Here’s what you can do to help:
STUDENTS
Merely by taking our tests every verified student who participates in our February contests will help increase the amount mathleague.org donates to the Red Cross. Beyond this though, students are encouraged to print off the pledge forms below and to solicit additional donations from members of their communities. Of course, we can also use your help in spreading the word to your fellow students and encouraging them to take our tests in February and to collect pledges as well.
(High school sprint round scores will be considered verified when mathleague.org receives both the official certification form and a copy of the sprint round answer sheet from the contest coordinator, as long as the student's email address appears on the answer sheet. Junior high sprint round scores will be considered verified when mathleague.org receives both the official certification form and the results spreadsheet from the contest coordinator.)
Download the pledge form here. The form is a Word document; be sure to modify the yellow sections to fit your own situation.
COACHES
You can help by encouraging students and coaches you know to participate in our contests in February. A list of events currently scheduled can be found at the following links: High School Contests Junior High Contests. We anticipate new events will be added to the schedule as word spreads about our campaign. If there is not a contest scheduled in your area, we encourage you to sign up here to host a local contest. In order to increase participation in this campaign, mathleague.org is canceling our contest fee in February for all contests in states where we do not currently hold a high school championship round each April. It is definitely not too late to plan to host a contest, and the price is certainly right! Hosting can be as simple as getting a few math teams from nearby schools to show up after school or on a weekend to take our tests.
mathleague.org will also be donating 10% of our gross revenue from CD sales between now and February 28 to the earthquake relief effort - including sales of our brand new volume 2 five-year CD covering tests from 2002-2007. Visit our store to make your purchases.
